From the Bar to the Brand: How Casa JAMEX Began
Every brand starts somewhere. Casa JAMEX started behind a bar.
Akea has spent more than 10 years as a bartender and mixologist. Over the years, he noticed that tequila was popular with customers, but the same familiar brands tended to dominate the bar.
That sparked a simple question:
Why couldn’t there be a tequila brand born in Jamaica?
Not tequila made in Jamaica (tequila belongs to Mexico and must be produced there), but a brand with a Jamaican identity, created for our market and crafted in Mexico with respect for the tradition behind the spirit.
That idea became Casa JAMEX.
Of course, having an idea and knowing how to build a business are two very different things.
That’s where I came in.
I started taking business classes through the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC), learning everything from business structure and cash flow to understanding the market we hoped to enter.
Later, I joined Founder Institute Caribbean, where the questions got harder.
Who is Casa JAMEX really for? Why would a Jamaican hotel, restaurant or bar want another tequila? What would make us different? And could we prove there was a market for the brand before producing thousands of bottles?
Those questions helped shape how we’re building Casa JAMEX today.
We’re still pre-production, working with a producer in Jalisco, Mexico, while building relationships and learning from Jamaica’s hospitality community.
We’re not trying to replace the tequila brands already behind the bar.
We want to earn Casa JAMEX a place beside them.
And that’s what this blog is about.
I’m going to share what happens between having an idea and eventually seeing that first Casa JAMEX bottle behind a Jamaican bar: the decisions, lessons, wins, setbacks, and probably a few what-were-we-thinking moments along the way.
Because we’re not telling the story after it’s finished.
We’re telling it while we’re building it.
Welcome to Casa JAMEX.
